Haar-Meisterklasse

Following our previous masterclass on eight common hair errors to avoid, we’ve been talking to more Converts concerned about damaged hair, restricted growth or imbalanced condition…

…Seven more routine sins came to light. Acquaint yourself with them here and ensure every day is a healthy, great-results hair day.

  1. Sleeking wet hair back into a tight style
Sleek buns, ponies and braids are in high demand... and, when you’re in a post-shower rush, quickly ensure hair’s tidy and looks great. Styling wet hair this way, though, is very damaging.

Why? The hydrogen bonds in strands stretch when wet. Then, as hair dries, they shrink. If we stretch hair back and anchor it when it’s wet, strands are likely to snap as they dry and try to shrink back - triggering traction alopecia and breakage.

Stylists achieve super-smooth, glass hair looks only on dry hair; never wet. Recreate it safely by first applying Leave-in perfecting cream pre-blow-dry. Next, style your hair, smooth flyaways, baby hairs or edges with Flyaway fix, then activate glass-shine with Weightless hair oil.
  2. Ignoring scalp care
Sun or snow, every day we shield the skin on our face and body from seasonal stressors. Our scalps, however, are often missed… yet it’s skin too. Scalp care is so important. Keeping it calm, conditioned and clear of blocked follicles will ensure your best and healthiest hair growth.

Massaging just a few drops of Pitta growth serum into your scalp daily is proven in both clinical and independent consumer trials to deliver all these crucial scalp benefits:
    - Soothes & relieves scalp irritation
    - Controls sebum production & protects from a flaky, dried-out scalp
    - Reduces Glycation (hair ageing worsened by UV damage)
    - Delays excess shedding from sun- or cold-weather induced scalp stress
  3. Overwashing
There’s no one-size-fits-all shampooing rule, of course: the ideal hair wash frequency depends on your personal hair type, scalp sebum levels and styling routine. As a general rule of thumb though, every 2-3 days is best - even for fine, thinning or heavy/oily types.

Why? Washing hair too frequently can cleanse away the natural oils your hair and scalp need to stay healthy. If you’re prone to an oily scalp, overwashing can also heighten the imbalance. What’s more, if you always heat style after, dryness, damage and split ends can all worsen.

Using the right shampoo for your hair type is crucial to helping get wash frequency right. Know your Dosha? Shop your ideal system here… if you’re not sure, take our hair quiz.
  4. Skipping heat protection
Yes, plenty of people still skip applying a heat protector before blow-drying or heat-styling hair. It’s time for our cashmere hair analogy again…

Imagine the condition of your favourite cashmere sweater if ironed daily on high heat. It would soon lose its suppleness, shape and softness. To make all these last longer, you look after your cashmere. The same applies for hair. Intense heat styling quickly saps hair of moisture, leaving it dry and damaged. Spending a few seconds to apply a shield protects from all this.

Silicone-free Leave-in perfecting cream harnesses Haritaki, Abyssinica and our Acti-power™complex. Together, they protect from heat-induced moisture loss, smooth strands and help repair broken bonds without weighing hair down or leaving it feeling greasy.
  5. Conditioning roots
The vast majority of concerns over greasy roots and heavy hair is as a result of applying conditioner at your roots (like you do shampoo).

Conditioner belongs only on older, drier sections of hair - aka the ends and mid-lengths. Hair at and near your scalp is new. It gets sufficient moisture from your natural scalp oils and the conditioning actives in our shampoos. Therefore, apply conditioner to the ends of hair, gently comb through mid-lengths and rinse.
  6. Not hydrating hair enough
Hydration is crucial to hair (and skin) health. We hear often from fine hair types who often skip conditioner because they’re worried it will leave hair flat. Every hair needs conditioner… just make sure you use one that’s right for your hair type: Vata for dry, damaged, Pitta for fine, thinning or Kapha for heavy, flat.
  7. Swimming with dry hair
How smooth and supple does hair feel after you’ve rinsed out conditioner? Incredible, isn’t it? Hair’s like a sponge, soaking up the goodness of the actives in our formula - even when damp.

Imagine, therefore, how much chlorine or salt it soaks up if you take a dip when hair's still dry. Pre-swim, soak your hair, then smooth on a layer of Leave-in perfecting cream or your Chāmpo conditioner. This makes it far harder for chlorine or salt to seep into hair, helping keep it in healthy condition.

As we’ve said before, there’s no one quick fix to safeguard strong, full, healthy hair growth. It comes from being conscious about your daily routine, adopting small, daily improvements and always using the right system for your hair type, texture and concerns.
