Keen to avoid letting it catch you out again? Now’s the ideal time to take proactive steps to halt summer shedding… and it’s far easier than you think.
What is summer shedding?
Summer shedding is a seasonal type of hair loss which peaks in late summer. Shedding is, of course, normal in the hair growth cycle. It signals hair moving into the telogen (resting) phase of the cycle and, eventually, shedding. Why does it seem excessive in late summer? Studies suggest three likely causes:
- Shedding excess spring/summer hair
To protect scalps from high seasonal UV, we hold onto hair for longer from spring - using it as a natural sun hat. As UV drops, this extra ‘protection’ isn’t needed. Hairs enter the resting phase and shed. - Shorter days influence our hair cycle
From late June, daylight hours reduce. This affects hormonal rhythms and melatonin production - both of which impact the hair cycle and explain why more follicles move into resting phase. - Summer scalp stress
Scalps are under a lot of stress in summer: heat, UV, sweat, chlorine, saltwater, product residue. If hair is fine, it can burn. If not washed properly, follicles get clogged. Chemicals strip natural oils, drying it out. All this can trigger inflammation, weaken follicles and disrupt hair growth.
The solution: healthy scalp = healthy hair growth
It’s long been our mantra and something we advocate year-round. In summer, though, diligent daily scalp care is more important than ever. Here’s what to do…
